Today, Minsk hosted the 10th reporting and election congress of the Belarusian Independent REP Trade Union.

The work of the trade union over the past five years has been recognized as satisfactory.

The main agenda point was the election of a new union chair. Two candidates were nominated: Mikhail Gromov, the REP union leader at the MTZ (Minsk Tractor Works), and Vasily Zavadsky, the executive director of the trade union. As a result, the latter became the winner with 26 delegates’ votes out of 40 present, while Mikhail Gromov was supported by 13 delegates.

The congress has extended the delegates’ powers by six months more in order to adopt amendments and additions to the REP’s Charter and elect deputy chairpersons.

In the near future, a sitting of the union council will be held to form its working bodies.

The congress and the newly elected chairman received many congratulations and letters of support from all over the world, in particular, from Walter Sanchez, General Secretary of IndustriALL Global Union, which brings together over 50 million workers in the mining, energy and manufacturing industries in 140 countries; Mikhailo Volynets, who has regretted, on behalf of the Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Ukraine (CFTUU) and the Independent Trade Union of Miners of Ukraine (ITUMU), that “in such a difficult time of the pandemic and the struggle of the Belarusian people for their rights, freedoms and democracy,” he could not be at the congress; G. Olkhovets, Chairman of the Trade Union of workers of the radio-electronic industry and mechanical engineering of Ukraine; the Russian trade union of workers in the radio-electronic industry, which noted that the REP Trade Union is “one of the most authoritative and influential public organizations in the trade union movement, persistently and consistently defending workers’ social and labour rights”; and others.

Vasily Zavadsky has responded with a message of gratitude to all who had addressed the 10th Congress of the REP Trade Union:

“Dear Walter, dear trade union brothers and sisters,

Thank you very much for your congratulations, for your warm words of support and for your solidarity with the independent REP Trade Union!

I regard the election to the post of the Chairman of the Belarusian Trade Union of the Radio-Electronic Industry Workers (REP Trade Union) as an indication of trust and great responsibility. We have a difficult and intense work ahead of us – not only the traditional trade union work of defending labour and socioeconomic rights of our fellow citizens, but also participation in the construction of a new Belarus on the basis of the rule of law and democratic values.

The authority and recognition of the Belarusian REP Trade Union, the energy, new ideas and enthusiasm of the trade union youth, based on the experience and wisdom of the veterans of our union – these are the basics, on which we will continue our joint activities to solve our multifaceted mission. Your congratulations, wishes, understanding of the events taking place in Belarus and your expressed readiness for solidarity and continued cooperation are giving rise in us of confidence in our common victory.”
