These are the outcomes of the work of the legal service in all the regions of Belarus in figures:

  • The number of consultations given – 2389, including to non-union members – 502;

  • The number of applications and complaints submitted to the court and the Prosecutor’s Office – 310;

  • The number of claim compiled without the participation of a REP’s lawyer (to non-union members) – 69;

  • The number of compiled complaints, applications, requests and appeals addressed to employers and officials of state bodies – 565;

  • The union lawyers took part in 218 trials, of which 86 trials were won, 49 lost, and 83 cases are still in process;

  • The total sum of money illegally withheld and returned to workers with the help of the REP lawyers – BYN 277 186.00.

Gennady Fedynich, the leader of the REP Trade Union, has commented on the work of lawyers and spoke about plans for 2019:

Frankly speaking, we see no obstacles in our legal work from the authorities or bodies of power. The REP Trade Union works in compliance with the legislation: we represent the interests of our members at litigations, not only in labour cases, but also in civil law ones. There are no claims to Belarusian judges. However, now we’ll monitor all the trials, without exception, in order to establish whether the so-called ‘trade union case’ has affected judgements. There’s another important aspect: in 2019, we’ll seriously engage in the development of our volunteer network aimed at helping the union legal inspectors: the flow of people turning to us for help is increasing. The main thing I want to state about the work of our legal service: the defence of workers’ interests is always the top priority. We deny all compromises; when one’s rights are grossly violated, we strain all efforts to defend them. This is our stance.
