The consideration of the appeals against the verdict lodged by Gennady Fedynich and Igor Komlik, leaders of the Belarusian independent REP Trade Union, took place today, November 9 at the Minsk City Court (No. 1 Dunina-Martsinkevicha Street) and started at 10 a.m.
Half an hour before the start of the court session, media professionals, human rights defenders union activists and ordinary non-indifferent citizens began gathering outside the courthouse.
The trial was presided over by Judge Sergey Khripach. The prosecution was represented by Gerasimovich. There are about 100 people in the courtroom, Ales Bialiatsky, Dmitry Solovyov, Valentin Stefanovich, Vasily Zavadsky among them. Diplomats from the Embassies of the United States, Great Britain, Lithuania and the Czech Republic were also present.
As it was during the sentencing on August 24, many supporters and union activists could not get into the courtroom, as policemen stopped the access of the public long before 10 a.m.
The session lasted till 3 p.m. with two breaks. Finally, despite the arguments of the defendants and their advocates, the Minsk City Court decided to uphold the verdict and reject the appeal complaints.
The audience met the decision with shouts “Shame!”
